The story’s the thing.

Storytelling permeates every part of my life. Whether in painting portraits or illustration, I’m fascinated with the narratives that shape our understanding of the world. Every portrait I paint is an examination of the inner life of that person: what brought them to this very moment in time? Where are they going next? What are their hopes, dreams, passions?

In illustrating, I am always excited to find ways to visually enhance the story I’m working with. I love finding themes to visually carry through a book, and I have an eye for the sorts of natural yet unexpected details that will give the images authentic life.

I work in both oils and watercolour, but watercolour is my favourite medium. Both incredibly challenging and rewarding, I love the vibrancy, texture and luminosity of watercolour.
